Amazon's Brand Protection Report: An Analysis



In its second Brand Protection Report Amazon detailed its investments and successes in protecting customers, brands and selling partners from counterfeits and frauds.


On a largely prominent e-commerce platform customers expect that products are authentic, which is an immense challenge in a world where the market of counterfeit and pirated products amounts to $464 billion a year which is 2.5% of the world trade.


To combat the infiltration of counterfeit goods Amazon invested amounts above $900 million and employed 12,000 people including software developers and expert investigators dedicated to protecting the e-commerce platform.


Key highlights of the Report include –


• Attempts to deter and stop bad actors were made by Amazon by stopping 2.5 million attempts to create fraudulent selling accounts, they were not allowed to sell even one product. This is a marked decrease from the previous year where approximately 6 million attempts were made.


• The Amazon Brand Registry provides tools to brands and companies to build a presence on the platform. It had grown to include 700,00 plus active brands. The number of notices of infringement submitted by brands in the Brand Registry decreased by 25%, the graph is also set to move downward due to the efficacy of automated brand protection tools provided.


• Amazon also has a Counterfeit Crimes Unit focuses on holding counterfeiters accountable. In 2021 the CCU filed more than 170 counterfeit litigation and has sued more than 600 criminals all over the world.


• Amazon has also identified, seized, and disposed of counterfeit products to protect the platform from counterfeit products and prevent reselling. They also worked with brands and law enforcement to prosecute counterfeiters.


• A blueprint was published guiding public-private partnerships to stop counterfeiters and building awareness. Amazon also worked with private sector to stop counterfeiters and partnering with customs to protect borders.


• Amazon also has a large consumer awareness base in the need to purchase only authentic products, the platform also protects the consumers from any sort of counterfeit products.
