Kuchinda Chilli of Odisha up next for GI Tag?

According to a report, special plans are in the works for Kuchinda chilli farmers in this district to help them raise their income by increasing chilli supply to enterprises outside of the state.

During a press conference, ex-Collector Dibyajyoti Parida revealed this. This is significant since the Spices Board of India (SBI) recently published a report claiming Kuchinda chilli to be the greatest in the country. The SBI report has boosted expectations for the iconic Kuchinda chilli receiving a Geographical Indication (GI) label.

The Kuchinda red chilli, also known as 'Bamra chilli,' has been given official recognition by the local administration. Over time, the chilli has developed a distinct identity as the Guntur chilli.

From September 2021 to September 2022, the SBI examined the Kuchinda chilli in two phases and found the colour and pungency of the Kuchinda chilli to be considerably superior than numerous other GI-tagged chiles in India.

Despite the fact that residents and farmers have been calling for a GI tag for the spice for years, it has yet to be granted due to claimed administrative indifference. After sending certain products to the lab for quality testing, the ORMAS (Odisha Rural Development and Marketing Society) published the report. When the GI tag is granted, it will assist farmers in exporting their products outside of the country and in establishing a name for the Kuchinda chilli.
